Balancing Acts – Home Schooling and Running a Business

In this three-minute read, our MD Louise Young shares her experiences trying to balance home schooling, being a good mum and running a business.

I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling it but following my battle with Covid-19 at the start of the year, I'm now experiencing a different type of fatigue.

I feel back to normal physically, but the stresses and strains of juggling homeschooling, work, and family life are taking its toll.

Now I'm not complaining as I realise, I'm luckier than many people. My five-year-old son Jude is a beautiful little bundle of fun and energy.

But boy oh boy I never realised just how hard it would be to keep him educated and entertained during this second lockdown.

It's tested my patience, my confidence, and at times, my sanity. I've felt guilty about not being entirely focused on helping him with his schoolwork, often because I'm dealing with something that's come up with work.

And the worst thing you can see when you're struggling to keep on top of things is seeing on social media the 'home school heroes.' You know the types from the outside looking in have everything organised, running smoother than George Clooney and overseeing a home full of harmony.

For me, that represents a false reality – we ALL have had our moments during this crazy last year.
The best advice I've heard given to parents and carers who are homeschooling is also the simplest.

Just do your best.
Hardly any of us have had teacher training, many of us are juggling work commitments, and all of us have had or are having a challenging time. So be kind to yourself.

During this lockdown, one of my highlights is downing the books, pencils, and computer tablets, and asking Jude if he would like to paint his bedroom furniture.

We washed it, prepared it, and sanded it all down, before painting it. Jude loved it, and so did I.

Thankfully, some children can return to school on 24th February which is great news for parents, teachers (many of whom seem to genuinely miss their pupils), and most importantly, children.
