What to do in your garden in Spring

Here in this two minute read we share tips for your spring garden

Spring is starting to make itself known. Crocuses are injecting colour into our winter-weary gardens and blossoms are appearing on the trees. Those of us who are keen to get back out in our gardens will find plenty to keep us busy. To ensure your garden flourishes later in the year, these are our top tips for what to get done in your garden during March.

Get tidying
March is the month when you should start preparing your garden for Spring and Summer. Clear away any debris from the recent storms, clean your patio and paths, remove weeds, turn over the soil to prepare it for new plants, and clean your garden furniture and outdoor entertaining areas.

Slow down
Welsh weather can be unpredictable so as tempting as it can be to start pruning your roses, hydrangeas, and fuchsias do hold off until at least mid-March to ensure that there will be no risk of damage from frost. Pruning them in late March will ensure that you are guaranteed to be rewarded with plants laden with beautiful blooms later in the year.

Get planting
It is likely your Spring bulbs have already started to sprout. That means now is the time to plant your Summer bulbs. Agapanthus, lilies, crocosmia, and dahlias should all be planted in March.

Unfortunately, weeds start to germinate in Spring. To avoid them fully sprouting you will need to tackle them now. Doing so will save you a headache later on.

Grow your own
Those who are wishing to grow fruit and vegetables this year should start preparing now. Rocket potatoes can be planted at the end of March which means they will be ready to harvest in June. Onions and strawberries can also be planted in March and will be ready to harvest in late summer and early summer respectively.

Luscious lawns
Mowing your lawn in March means you can make sure it has a nice, even cut before the Spring growth spurt occurs.
The Royal Horticultural Society says the best time to treat moss in your lawn is either in Spring or Autumn so grab the opportunity to spruce up your lawn before the Summer.
It is possible to use a fan rake to clear small areas of moss from your lawn but if the problem is more widespread, mix 120ml of washing up liquid with 9L of water and then spray it over the affected area. Within 24 hours the moss will turn brown or orange and you will be able to easily remove the dead moss with a rake. Ensure to dispose of it away from your lawn so that the spores do not drift back onto your lawn.

Organic options
The warmer weather will bring out the snails and slugs so make sure to protect young seedlings by scattering ground eggshells and/or coffee grounds around the base of your plants. Garlic is another natural slug and snail deterrent.

With a little preparation in early Spring, you will guarantee your garden will be looking its best this year. If you would like to make your garden sale-ready but aren't sure what to do, get in touch and we can pop round to give you a professional opinion
